An excellent opportunity for a Group Head of Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) to join a well-established and ambitious househouse-builder with an excellent reputation for delivering high-quality homes across the UK. With a growing portfolio of developments spanning the Midlands, South West, Hertfordshire, London and Essex, the business is experiencing sustained growth and has exciting expansion plans over the coming years.

This role will ideally suit someone who is working for a reputable house builder as an established Head of HSE looking for a new challenge or a HSE Manager looking for their next career progression.

The Role

The Group Head of HSE is a key leadership role, reporting directly into the Board of Directors and responsible for shaping and delivering the HSE strategy across the organisation.

The role oversees Health, Safety & Environmental across live construction sites, regional offices and showrooms/sales offices. Working closely with the Executive Team, Construction Directors, Site Managers and subcontractors, the successful candidate will build a positive safety culture, ensure legal compliance, reduce organisational risk and create a modern, commercially focused health and safety function that adds value across the business.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Review the current outsourced health and safety provision and develop a phased strategy to establish an in-house health and safety function.
  • Oversee health and safety performance across multiple construction sites.
  • Lead investigations into accidents, incidents and near misses.
  • Identify root causes and implement corrective and preventative actions.
  • Support Site Managers in delivering effective site inductions and toolbox talks.
  • Build and develop an internal health and safety team as the business grows
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant UK legislation including:
  • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, CDM Regulations, Building Safety Act, RIDDOR, COSHH, Working at Height Regulations, PUWER, LOLER.
  • Carry out regular site inspections and audits to ensure compliance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Review and monitor risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work.
  • Develop meaningful KPIs and safety performance metrics.
  • Produce monthly reports for the Executive Team and Board.
  • Ensure environmental compliance across all construction sites / offices, promoting best practice and adherence to environmental legislation.
  • Monitor and manage site environmental risks, including dust suppression, noise, waste management surface water management, pollution prevention etc.

Person Specification

  • Chartered Membership of IOSH (CMIOSH).
  • Significant senior health and safety leadership experience within residential housebuilding or the wider construction sector.
  • NEBOSH Diploma (desirable) / NEBOSH Construction / NEBOSH General Certificate
  • Excellent knowledge of CDM Regulations / Building Safety Act.
  • Exceptional leadership and influencing skills.
  • Ability to build effective relationships and communicate effectively across all levels of the business.
  • Demonstrable success in improving organisational safety culture.
  • Experience managing outsourced consultants
  • Understanding of behavioural safety principles.
  • Hands on / 'On the tools' experience working on a building site would be highly advantageous
  • Full UK Driving Licence.

Salary / Package

  • Salary: £75,000 - £85,000
  • Car Allowance: £6,000
  • Holidays: 25 days plus bank holidays.
