Overview

An established logistics business is seeking an experienced General Manager to lead a busy pallet network and general haulage operation in the North East on a 12-month fixed-term contract.

This is a key operational leadership role, responsible for driving performance, ensuring compliance, and delivering exceptional service across a large-scale transport and distribution environment.

The successful candidate will be an accomplished logistics professional with proven experience in leading complex, multi-functional operations and developing engaged, high-performing teams.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage day-to-day site operations across transport, warehousing, and support functions.

  • Ensure operational excellence across all key performance areas - safety, service, cost, and productivity.

  • Provide effective leadership and development for a team of approximately 150 colleagues.

  • Manage financial performance and site budgets of around Β£15M, driving efficiency and profitability.

  • Oversee compliance with all regulatory requirements, including O-Licence, health & safety, and transport legislation.

  • Deliver outstanding customer service and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders.

  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, cost control, and service quality.

  • Collaborate with senior leadership and cross-functional teams to align with wider business strategy.


Experience & Skills

  • Proven experience in a General Manager or Senior Operations Manager role within logistics, haulage, or pallet network environments.

  • Strong financial and commercial acumen, experienced in managing multi-million-pound budgets.

  • Excellent people management skills - confident leading large, multi-shift teams.

  • In-depth understanding of transport operations, compliance, and health & safety.

  • Demonstrable track record of improving operational efficiency and service levels.

  • Strong communicator and stakeholder manager, able to influence at all levels.

  • Hands-on, pragmatic leader with a focus on continuous improvement and delivery.
