Assistant Management Accountant - 3 to 6 month FTC
Location: Reading, Berkshire - 3 days in the office, 2 at home
Reporting To: Senior Management Accountants and CFO
Salary: c£42,000 - £44,000 FTE (depending on experience)
Contract: Fixed Term (3-6 months initially)
Start Date: Ideally by mid June 2025

Role Overview
We are delighted to be seeking an experienced Assistant Management Accountant to join our client's Finance Team on a fixed-term basis. Our client is a growing Education provider, and you will be responsible for the accurate and timely delivery of key financial processes, including reconciliations, reporting, and the preparation of management accounts. You will play a vital part in maintaining financial accuracy and ensuring compliance across the Trust's operations.
Ideally you will be available at short notice to start this role - and potentially have previous and recent experience of working in a similar sector - OR have worked in a multi-site, Group Head Office, dealing with various entities.
Key Responsibilities as the Assistant Management Accountant
Banking & Reconciliation
- Process bank receipts, including transactions from school payment systems.
- Perform regular bank and credit card reconciliations across multiple accounts.
- Monitor daily bank activity and update financial records, leveraging automation where possible.
Accounting & Reporting
- Prepare and post journals for prepayments, accruals, and deferred income.
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts and investigate discrepancies.
- Maintain and review the fixed asset register, identifying capital expenditure.
- Generate and review VAT reclaim reports in line with HMRC guidance.
Audit & Compliance
- Assist in compiling audit schedules and supporting documentation.
- Ensure adherence to internal controls and external financial regulations.
- Contribute to ongoing improvements in finance systems and processes.
Budgeting & Internal Support
- Produce departmental reports for budget holders, detailing actuals and commitments.
- Maintain accurate financial data and provide timely updates to internal stakeholders.
- Support the preparation of monthly management accounts and annual budgeting processes.
Person Specification
Essential
- AAT qualified or studying towards ACCA/CIMA (or equivalent)
- Strong knowledge of double-entry bookkeeping
- Experience with bank and balance sheet reconciliations
- Proficient in Excel and financial systems (Sage preferred)
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong organisational and time management skills
Desirable
- Experience in education or multi-academy trust finance
- Understanding of public sector or education-related VAT regulations
- Familiarity with fixed asset and capital accounting
