Job Title: Accounts Assistant

Department: Finance

Salary: Up to £32,000

Location: West Bromwich

Contract: Permanent - Hybrid

Purpose of the Role

The Accounts Assistant will support the finance team across a variety of transactional accounting activities, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Credit Control. The role ensures accurate financial processing, timely payments and receipts, and effective management of customer accounts and supplier relationships.

Key Responsibilities

Accounts Payable

  • Process supplier invoices, ensuring accurate coding and approval workflows.
  • Complete three-way matching (PO, goods receipt, invoice).
  • Prepare and process supplier payment runs.
  • Handle supplier queries professionally.
  • Reconcile supplier statements and resolve discrepancies.
  • Maintain an accurate AP ledger.

Accounts Receivable

  • Raise sales invoices and credit notes.
  • Allocate customer payments correctly.
  • Monitor outstanding debt and support AR month-end reporting.
  • Maintain up-to-date customer account records.

Credit Control

  • Proactively chase overdue customer payments via phone and email.
  • Build strong relationships to support timely payments.
  • Investigate and resolve payment disputes.
  • Maintain detailed records of debt-chasing activity.
  • Escalate high-risk accounts when necessary.
  • Support cashflow forecasting with accurate expected payment data.

General Finance Support

  • Assist with month-end tasks including journals, reconciliations, and reporting.
  • Support balance sheet reconciliations (AP/AR/other ledgers).
  • Maintain organised financial records and documentation.
  • Provide support to the wider finance team as needed.
  • Assist with internal and external audit requests.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Experience in AP, AR, and Credit Control (mixed exposure beneficial).
  • Strong attention to detail and numerical accuracy.
  • Good working knowledge of Excel and finance systems.
  • Confident communicator, comfortable with suppliers and customers.
  • Ability to manage workload and meet deadlines.
  • Problem-solving approach and willingness to learn.
