Job Title: Accountant (Not-for-Profit)

Salary: £50,000 to £54,000 per annum base salary
Hybrid working - 2 days a week in office and 3 days from home
Role Overview
This role acts as the lead finance professional for a not‑for‑profit organisation and its associated trading entities, taking ownership of day‑to‑day financial management, statutory reporting, compliance, and strategic financial support. The postholder will work closely with senior stakeholders to provide insight, governance, and financial leadership across the organisation and its international operations.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Act as the primary finance contact for the not‑for‑profit organisation and its related commercial entities
- Prepare annual statutory accounts for the organisation and all associated entities
- Oversee monthly management accounts, including detailed variance analysis, and ensure remedial action is taken where required
- Manage balance sheet integrity, including accruals and prepayments, ensuring all reconciliations (bank, intercompany, and inter‑entity) are completed monthly
- Ensure all income streams are accurately recorded and reconciled, including imports from online payment platforms and other third‑party systems
- Maintain robust coding and timely posting of all income and expenditure
Governance, Compliance & Controls
- Ensure ongoing compliance with applicable accounting standards, not‑for‑profit regulators, and statutory obligations
- Act as an authorised signatory across banking arrangements and financial platforms
- Maintain and enhance financial policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Oversee PCI compliance and associated documentation to ensure standards are maintained
- Manage audit relationships and act as the main liaison for both internal and external auditors
Fundraising, Grants & Stakeholder Support
- Provide financial business partnering to senior fundraising leadership, offering insight, challenge, and support
- Prepare annual budgets and periodic re‑forecasts in collaboration with senior stakeholders
- Support the financial aspects of grants, including applications, monitoring, and reporting obligations
- Ensure gift‑related tax claims are prepared, submitted, and managed accurately
- Work closely with relevant teams on donations, legacy income, and restricted funds
International & Cross‑Entity Activities
- Coordinate with overseas finance teams to support the accounting and reporting of international branch operations
- Ensure consistent financial processes and compliance across UK and European operations
- Support cross‑organisational projects, ensuring financial governance compliance within project management frameworks
Leadership, Systems & Projects
- Provide financial leadership and guidance across the organisation despite having no direct reports
- Contribute to the wider finance function, providing support as required
- Assist in the implementation of new systems, technologies, or process improvements with financial impact
- Oversee stock and inventory accounting where applicable
Trustee & Senior Reporting
- Prepare and present financial reports for trustee or board‑level meetings
- Contribute to organisational policy development and financial decision‑making
Relationship Management & Communication
- Confident communicator able to explain financial information clearly to non‑finance stakeholders
- Effective when working with diverse internal and external audiences at varying levels of financial understanding
Skills & Experience Required
Qualifications
- CCAB qualified or equivalent professional experience (ACA, ACCA or CIMA)
Technical Skills
- Advanced Excel capability
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, including data visualisation and reporting tools
Experience
- Experience in a comparable senior finance role within a not‑for‑profit setting
- Demonstrated success in driving change, efficiency, and process improvement
- Exposure to stock management and trading or retail operations
- Experience with reporting across UK & Europe (ideally France & Belgium)
- Charity SORP experience/ knowledge
