Gleeson Recruitment are currently supporting a rapidly growing retailer who are looking for an experienced Senior Project Manager to join their team on a permanent basis at their head office in Herefordshire

Overview of the role:

Responsible for managing projects, largely from the IT portfolio, including technical/infrastructure and development based, using our in-house project management framework. Ensuring projects are appropriately planned, organised, led and reported; adhering to PMO standardised procedures, whilst meeting objectives on time and on budget.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Use the in-house PM framework to deliver enterprise-level projects with an appropriate level of planning and governance that provides the right balance of agility and predictability
  • Select the appropriate governance approach for each project, bringing the best of Agile or Waterfall to the table
  • Manage several concurrent, high profile projects using the in-house project management framework that may cross multiple business units and one or more 3rd party providers. Ensure projects are appropriately planned, organised, lead and reported to meet objectives on time and on budget
  • Bring the skills to manage development, infrastructure, and end-user change
    • Predicted split: 60% technical/infrastructure and 40% development/end user but this will flex as dictated by the business roadmap
    • The technical/infrastructure portfolio includes the annual PCI attestation
  • Lead and motivate the Scrum teams assigned to your projects, to deliver against their commitments and remove blockers to the project. Encourage sustainable high performance and quality
  • Support the day to day running of the Scrum teams assigned to your projects by ensuring all Agile ceremonies run smoothly and have a productive outcome and impediments are removed
  • Empower the project teams so that they are fully engaged in the project and understand the business goals and objectives, so that they feel they are making a valuable contribution to the business
  • Manage sponsor and stakeholder expectations of project deliverables. Define, manage and deliver project communications, including progress updates and steering groups
  • Drive the practice of minimal viable product, ensuring core features of change are identified and prioritised to deliver early business value. Support the Scrum teams to implement MVP
  • Work with the Architecture and Design authorities to ensure that solutions stay within the scope of the project and MVP is always considered
  • Responsible for the management of project risks, issues, dependencies and blockers, ensuring they are communicated, managed and mitigated appropriately
  • Proactively manage relationships with third parties during project activities; managing delivery performance and adherence to agreed governance
  • Manage the people side of change by increasing stakeholder engagement, involvement and adoption to minimise resistance


  • 7+years as a project and/or programme manager running large, complex projects in a variety of environments and using various waterfall and Agile methodologies
  • 5+ years working within a PMO i.e. used to providing a standardised stakeholder experience
  • 5+ years leading technical/infrastructure projects or as a technical resource on projects of this nature



  • Significant experience in managing infrastructure projects with the ability to take part in technical discussions and translate into project plans and stakeholder reporting
  • Solid understanding of the software development lifecycle and practices, as well as expert knowledge of Agile and traditional project management principles and practices and when best to apply them
  • Strong and diverse experience of delivering multi-discipline business and technology projects using Agile methodologies
  • Experience of leading multi-function project teams including business and technology SME's. Strong leadership, facilitation and coaching skills
  • Proven working knowledge of Agile practices, values and principles
  • Experience of change management principles, methodologies and tools with a solid understanding of how people go through change and the change curve
  • Good level of technical understanding to provide credible leadership to the development community and to be able to accurately and objectively evaluate complex project risks and issues
  • The ability to command respect and be considered credible by the project teams and the project stakeholders
  • Demonstrates exceptional drive and tenacity to get things done and deliver business value; understands the importance of commitments to delivery
  • Excellent communicator, able to comprehend and translate technical or complex issues clearly to meet the competency level of the audience, i.e. technical and non-technical staff
  • Assertive and confident with a natural ability to facilitate conflict resolution but make tough decisions when required
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to influence others and move toward a common vision or goal
  • Proactive and passionate about continuous improvement and self-development
  • Consistently demonstrates integrity and high work standards


  • Experience of delivering business transformation/legacy system replacement and infrastructure projects
  • Experience of Agile project management tools such as Jira
  • Actively involved in thought leadership and communities, looking for ways to improve and evolve current practice
  • eCommerce, retail or logistics experience
  • Certified Agile Project Manager, Scrum Master or similar qualification
  • Experience of managing PCI the attestation process
