The Commercial Finance Director will have a critical role to play in taking development to the next level in this regulated, entrepreneurial environment. They will be expected to drive company growth against key metrics, whilst providing key insights and commercial insights and focus to put the business in the strongest position.

THE ROLE

The business is at a key inflection point for growth and this is a new strategically focused Commercial Finance Director (FD) opportunity, in the West Midlands to support these growth ambitions. This executive position will report directly to the CEO and with a dotted line to the MD.

The principle focus of the role is to lead the businesses commercial finance activity and to enable and contribute towards a rapid growth strategy. You will work closely with other departments to provide forward looking decision support and to enable the development and achievement of the commercial strategy. The role requires strong financial and commercial leadership and first-class influencing skills to work in partnership with the board of directors to drive business performance and growth.

You must be comfortable influencing at board level and combine the ability to think strategically with a positive hands-on attitude. You will have a track record of success in similar, commercially focused led finance roles.

Responsibilities will include:

  • As part of the executive board engaging proactively on strategic business decisions, giving a financial and market view
  • Providing business wide financial and commercial leadership and inputting into operational and strategic decisions
  • Leading the strategic planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes
  • Overall accountability for ensuring that appropriate financial controls are in place and that working capital is managed effectively
  • Leading the finance team through a commercial transformation to further develop a culture of high performance, aligned to the businesses long term growth strategy.
  • Ensuring the company complies with accounting, taxation, financial and regulatory requirements, and liaising with External Auditors and other Regulators.
  • Providing commercial insight, into the development of key partnerships, funding, and future development of the business. Taking the lead role in maintaining existing and developing new external partnerships as become commercially appropriate.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Cultural and personality fit is critical. The successful candidate must be commercially astute, have high intellect and low ego, with strong influencing skills and significant drive and energy and a can-do attitude. You must have a track record of success in commercially focused senior finance roles. With this will come an appreciation of what good looks like to further increase the level of finance engagement and business partnering across the organisation. You must also have a good balance of strategic vision and hands on operating style.

A track record of success in driving and challenging performance will also be important, and prior experience in a commercial regulated environment will be highly advantageous.

In addition to being a talented, dynamic individual, the new Commercial Finance Director will be

  • A qualified accountant (ACA/CIMA/ ACCA) with significant post qualification experience, and must have experience of working at an FD level and being part of an operating board
  • The sector you come from is of less importance than your skills and experience, but prior fintech and/or regulated industry experience will be advantageous
  • Must have had end to end operational finance responsibility
  • Strong business partnering skills; the ability to provide strategic, analytical, and operational support to the Board
  • Commercial flair and acumen - the ability to see the whole big picture without losing sight of detail and a track record of impacting the bottom line will be important
  • Experience of gaining investment, building partnerships with other organisations, and working with VC's and trade buyers would be advantageous
  • Gravitas, passion, and the ability to operate in an entrepreneurial business is essential
  • The ability to lead, develop and mentor a finance function
  • A strong track record of leading high performing finance teams and through periods of change
  • High levels of understanding in relation to legislative and regulatory compliance
